Looner was started in 1999 by whitewater kayaker and photographer Deb Pinniger. While kayaking on the Zambezi River in Africa, Deb befriended the local village craftspeople and asked them to carve a few kayak related pieces. Later that year she started to sell them at the World Freestyle Kayak Championships in Taupo, New Zealand.
